"The Wave" – Cement Floor Repair

This was a classic cement floor repair project. Our Flower Mound homeowner had installed a large concrete pool deck for their home and had decided to do it themselves right in the middle of summer.

All and all, the installation actually went all right except for the last twenty-five or so square feet that set up so fast on them that they couldn’t smooth it out completely.

A brown stained concrete overlay applied over a pool deck with aqua blue water inside. The pool is surrounded by palm trees and a freshly stained, orange/red colored wood fence

The result was a nice concrete pool deck with what looked like a large, uneven patch right along one edge of the pool. For the money they saved, they decided to live with it for a few years but now as they are wanting to sell the house to relocate to another state, it’s become somewhat of an eyesore.

We offer many cement floor repair options and for exterior applications a skim coat overlay is the most economical way of getting different concrete areas to blend together.

This Flower Mound homeowner liked the cost and the look of the skim coat and the fact that it goes on thin, often as little as 1/8” thick, so it wasn’t going to affect the height of the deck in any way.

I was a little surprised when she asked us to score a stone pattern in the patio part of the pool deck as she was trying to sell the place after all, and scoring adds a little more to the cost of the job but I think it was the right decision as it made this area stand out from the rest of the concrete.

For exterior cement floor repairs, we normally just power wash the floor to make sure it is clean instead of grinding it like we do in interior applications. This is because most exterior concrete has what is called a “light broom finish” on it, i.e., they pass a broom over the surface while it is drying to create a little bit of texture.

This texture is great for our skim coat overlay material to “bite into” so all we have to do is to make sure the concrete is clean which is what the power washing does.

This Flower Mound project went very smoothly, we prepped the floor, applied the skim coat overlay, scored the patio area into the stone pattern and applied a concrete sealer over everything to keep it protected.

We also did the same for the front patio. If you look carefully, you can see a small “wave” design in part of the floor.

Sometimes we find defects in the floor that require more than two coats to cover up. Normally we can just add a third coat to the entire patio but of course that has an additional cost.

In this case our Flower mound homeowner just wanted to cover up this small area so we decided to apply the cement floor repair material in a custom fashion, overlaying this part of the floor with a third coat but ending it in a “wave” pattern. It came out looking sweet.
